The following is a starter list of great books to read for success.

All of the books could be read alone ( and used to succeed)  BUT reading many or all of them AND acting on the combined new knowledge will improve your life and can lead to success.
Success has no specific definition- it is what YOU say it is.
Is it? :

  1. Career goal
  2. Financial Target
  3.  Health Goal
  4. Family
  5.   What is YOUR GOAL

Many of these authors and their companies have useful / great websites and audio/video recordings that are great tools.  This allows you to participate in AUTOMOBILE UNIVERSITY [as Zig Ziglar said] while driving or working with your hands.  You can listen to a great book or great program and let the knowledge infuse your mind and soul.

Power of Positive Thinking – Norman Vincent Peale
See You at the Top – Zig Ziglar
Over the Top – Zig Ziglar
The Success Principles – Jack Canfield
How to Make Friends and Influence People -Dale Carnegie
How to Stop Worrying and Start Living – Dale Carnegie
University of Success – Og Mandino
Greatest Salesman in the World (parts 1 and 2) _Og Mandino
Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude – Napoleon Hill and W.Clement Stone
Think and Grow Rich -Napoleon Hill
The Law of Success – Napoleon Hill
Lead the Field – Earl Nightingale
Mans Search for Meaning – Viktor E. Frankl
High Performance Habits – Brendon Burchard
The Compound Effect – Darren Hardy
Mindset -Carol Dweck
Nine Steps to Financial Freedom – Suze Orman
The Magic of Thinking Big – David Schwartz
Body and Soul – Anita Roddick
Daring Greatly – Brene Brown
Lean In – Sheryl Sandberg

 Many, many more.

Once you search for these on line the computer/search engine will give other great suggestions.

Lifestyle Eating Plan- Diets fail but Life (style)will Find a Way June 25, 2018

I got interested in the idea of eating better and fitness when confronted/surprised by a diagnosis of Atrial Fibrillation ( A Fib ) and Heart Failure. I was in the hospital and had several days to think this over and made plans to start over with proper food and exercise plan.

The medicine the prescribed did some of the work but ultimately a long and good life would require work on the the road, in the gym and with the refrigerator .

I needed to lose weight and do it quickly but safely. Also needed it to be a sustainable loss with a plan that could be maintained for the long haul. I read several stories and a few books. I decided on the High Carb-Low fat approach noted below. I specifically started with Dr. McDougall and his focus on high starches for the satiety factor they provide. I read the books and the recipe books and looked at others.

I am also looking forward to the continued weight loss and the relief I feel in my legs, knees and feet. Much of what I am trying to eat leads to less inflammation.

My personal focus is eliminating added salt and processed sugar as there is sufficient sodium in the foods I eat and natural sugars in the veggies and fruit I consume.

Forks Over Knives

The Forks over Knives (FOK) plan is a Whole Food Plant Based diet with a focus on whole grains and plants. The foundation is vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans or legumes, and tubers. It eliminates or minimizes animal products including dairy ,eggs as well as refined foods like sugar, oils and bleached flour.

It grew from a movie and now includes books and videos and websites. See below

Starch Solution ( more than carbs)

Dr John McDougall has written some books and promotes an eating plan that centers on starches. The starches ( whole food sources) are the centerpiece of the diet with greens and fruits and vegetables . Making great meals is a matter of finding great recipes( McDougall has some) and include some appropriate flavorings, sauces and seasonings.

The following list has been separated and categorized in rough groups. I have also added avocados since i forgot in the original post. I have also categorized it as veggie AND fruit since it is easily used in savory and sweet dishes to help with pain and discomfort.

The first suggestion I have is to find a few good cookbooks and food/recipe websites. Maybe I will do a cookbook list in a future post. Avoid older books with lots of creamy sauces, salt and fatty food recipes. Newer recipes and those written by and/or  promoted by athletes, health “gurus” and MD’s with cardio specialty.

VEGETABLES:

GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES,

BOK CHOY (THE BRASSICAS) / Broccoli

CELERY ,

BEETS,

Avocado

FRUITS:
BLUEBERRIES ,

PINEAPPLE ,

Avocado

FISH:

SALMON  ,

NUTS:

WALNUTS,

OILS AND SEEDS AND HERBS:

COCONUT OIL,

CHIA SEEDS /  FLAXSEED,

TURMERIC    /      GINGER

The first question or thought do you want cooked food or raw?  Salads or main dishes ?  Drinks/dressings/spreads?

Snacks/lunches to carry?

SOME EXAMPLES-

Broccoli and garlic can be blended raw and made into a delicious and nutritious PESTO to put on whole grain noodles, or other veggies/bread.

Avocado and blueberries and a tiny bit of ground ginger can be combined with some chia seeds(that have been soaked in filtered water) and mix completely and store in fridge for a few hours to serve as DELICIOUS pudding that is loaded with a nearly completely nutritious snack or side dish.

Salmon can be served with celery and greens, cooked in coconut oil and with a light crust of ground flaxseed.  With a delicious pineapple and walnut (blended ) sauce.

Turmeric and ginger are delicious flavorings that will( peer reviewed studies) reduce inflammation in the joints and systemic concerns as well. They can be purchased as the fresh “root” and used in chunks or small dice or chopped or shredded. It may also be purchased in dry/ powder form. Turmeric is also widely available in Curry formulations for tremendous recipes( using many of the foods listed above plus other great veggies.

I am not going to spend a lot of time on salads but EAT YOUR GREENS!!

One key trait that many of these foods ( and many other lists of GREAT FOODS) is fiber. I have been doing a lot of reading and concluded that a diet hat includes 30 -40 grams of fiber from foods is essential for health, weight control and probably inflammation.  cup of broccoli, bok choy and a big serving of dark greens will add up to 10-15 grams….celery and beets will add 3-8 more grams, walnuts a gram or 2 and a serving each or flaxseed/chia will bring the total to 24-26 grams. grab and apple and an orange or a banana and the daily 30 grams is reached easily.

After years of heavy barbells and dumbbells in the football weight room I still enjoy exercising and lifting BUT in my 40’s and now 50- I do not need great strength or size any more- IN FACT I need to be and stay smaller.

I have done a bunch of body-weight exercises and now enjoying the resistance bands. I get to feel the pull and burn of the workout with out the growth- also I am not spending 2-3 hours, 6 days a week.

Now the bands are helpful for the fun of a workout and are also useful for rehab and recovery of a few injuries i carry around. Shoulder, ankle But the rest is for fun and fitness.

Looking back  on football and other lifting for sports- I wish I knew about, or that the bands were more popular(outside of the Training room).

* Some basic Workout Suggestions.

These are great starters and with some creativity, these 4 moves can be expanded into 8-12-24 exercises for the entire body.

Need some running/Fitness Inspiration? Hit the library !

There are many great books to inspire runners and fitness minded individuals. There are 2-3 in this collection of 10.

The best here are by Bart Yasso (of Runners World) and Once a Runner.  The others are OK.

Now to find a list of HOW TO run books for beginners that will not get people hurt.  I continue to recommend Chi Running and the Galloway Book on Running for safe books.
